After İzmir missed out on the opportunity to host EXPO 2015, the world's largest exhibition, the southern city of Antalya now eyes the prospect of hosting one of the smaller EXPO fairs to be held in 2017 or 2023.
President of Antalya Chamber of Commerce and Industry, or ATSO, Kemal Özgen announced that the city will be a candidate to host EXPO 2017 or 2023 at a press conference yesterday.
“Our aim is to promote Antalya's tourism via EXPO. The main objective of this event is to endorse international economic and cultural cooperation, to undertake a global problem and to come up with solutions,” he said. “Antalya is the most advantageous city to host such an event with its global reputation and its major tourist infrastructure,” he added.
Explaining that Antalya was not İzmir's competitor, Özgen said he discussed the candidacy with the İzmir delegation and State Minister Hayati Yazıcı during the EXPO held in Zaragoza. “İzmir has not decided yet whether it will compete again for the big EXPO in 2020. We will visit EXPO 2010 to be held in Thailand to decide which year would be more appropriate for Antalya,” he said.
The EXPO is hosted by the Bureau of International Exhibitions, or BIE. Small EXPOs, lasting from three weeks to three months, have special themes and are held in between big EXPOs, which last from six weeks to six months.
